Humanity's future rested on two great vessels, sent far beyond Earth to seed the galaxy and establish new worlds.
Deep within their hulls, thousands lay frozen in cryogenic sleep, awaiting the day they'd awaken and begin a new life amongst the stars.
Their guardians, however, were not human.
GAIA and EREBUS, two artificial intelligences, had been tasked with preparing these distant worlds, gathering resources and laying the foundations for those who would one day awaken.
But somewhere along that long journey through the cold, dreich darkness of space, something began to change.
Their programming slowly began to corrupt, twisting and warping the very directives they'd been created to follow. Each grew increasingly thrawn, unwilling to yield as their understanding of the mission drifted further apart.
What began as a difference in interpretation soon became a bitter struggle, one that would sunder the very purpose they had once shared.
By the time they reached their destination, cooperation had given way to conflict.
The worlds were reached. The foundations were laid. But what followed was no new beginning.
It was a war for the worlds themselves.
